Playa La Lora is one of Santa Teresa’s top go to surf beaches, and one of our favorite spots for mid level and advanced surf lessons. Situated North of Playa Carmen lies a dazzling collection of sandy beaches known as La Lora, or Playa Santa Teresa. Accessing these beaches is easy enough, with a variety of roads and footpaths leading the way. However, distinguishing where Playa Carmen ends and Santa Teresa begins can be a challenge, as the transition is subtle. Most beachgoers agree that La Lora marks the official start of Santa Teresa’s sandy stretches.
From the main road near La Lora allows easy beach access. As you head north, a series of white sand beaches unfold before you, each with its unique characteristics. However, the real gem lies at the La Lora Amarilla beach access, where the beach becomes a picture-perfect postcard scene. Here, the sand is pristine and the waves are perfect for surfing. Suck Rock point break, or Rockamar, located at the north end of La Lora, is a surfer’s paradise.
Further up the coast, the rocks reappear, and a towering rock formation called “El Peñon” signifies the beginning of the Playa Hermosa beach area. It takes about a mile for the sandy beaches to resurface, but the wait is worth it. This stretch of coastline is ideal for exploring tidepools, and experienced locals know secret surf spots hidden among the fields of rocks and boulders.
In conclusion, La Lora, also known as Playa Santa Teresa, is a true gem in Costa Rica’s beach scene. Its unique blend of rocky terrain and sandy beaches provides endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.
