Punta Barigona is a hidden gem in Malpais, often overlooked by tourists due to its difficult-to-find location. As a surf school, we love taking our students here to experience the pristine surf spots on both sides of the huge rock point – Mar Azul and Bahia Barigona. The flat grassy area next to the point is perfect for our surf instructors to give lessons and analyze technique.
But there’s more to Punta Barigona than just surfing. In front of the giant rock, you’ll find a stunning set of tidepools, perfect for exploring during low tide. The region around Mal Pais is also a popular surf spot, with the pointbreaks of Punta Barigona and Boca Barranca offering lengthy rides on large swells.
To get here, drive south from the Playa Carmen area into Malpais and keep an eye out for the sign that says “Mar Azul” on the right. Turn towards the beach and continue to the end of the road, then go left until you reach the grassy area.
Punta Barigona is the perfect place for a day trip away from the crowds, with natural beauty that will take your breath away. And as surf instructors, we love showing our students the best spots for catching waves in this pristine location.
