Playa Los Suecos, also known as “The Secret Beach” or Punta Murcielago, is a hidden gem at the southern end of Mal Pais on the Nicoya Peninsula. Despite not being an ideal surfing beach, it is a great spot for families to swim and snorkel during low tide. To get to Playa Los Suecos, you will need to drive on a rough road, but it is passable with a 4WD vehicle. Once you reach the old abandoned Sunset Reef hotel at Fisherman’s beach (Playa Malpais), turn left, and you’ll find a parking area and a trail down to the beach on the right.

The cove is protected by a rock reef, creating a safe environment for swimming and snorkeling. As it is situated next to Cabo Blanco’s protected marine reserve, you’ll be able to see a variety of marine life, such as fish, eels, octopus, stingrays, sea turtles, and lobsters. You may even spot giant hermit crabs. Spearfishing enthusiasts also come here to hunt for snappers and groupers that stray from the protected waters next door. The rugged topography of the rocks provides ample hiding places for fish, such as racks, crevices, caves, and boulder fields.

During super low tides, a long berm of rocks is exposed, and you can walk far out into the sea and spy on rare sea creatures trapped in pools that are usually only accessible through diving or snorkeling. In addition, the rock reef outside protects the beach from heavy surf, making the water more tranquil.

Playa Los Suecos is also part of Cueva Murcielago Wildlife Refuge, where you can find the bat cave, which is on the west side of a huge rock facing the sea. While it may be difficult to get there, it is an amazing experience as you’ll find thousands of bats inside. Another interesting feature of the area is Punta Murcielago, also known as “Bat Point,” a beautiful geological feature that attracts many photographers trying to capture a perfect beach paradise.
